Mr. Mahajan spoke extensively on the topic “The Marketing Panorama – Reclaiming Marketing from ROI Zealtory“. Coined to what he called as “The ROMI TRAP”, he elaborated on how companies’ drive towards measuring and quantifying the return on marketing investment and advent of new mediums and platforms like digital and social media have been cannibalising the culture of Marketing. According to him the intuition and creativity which led to many successful and innovative marketing strategies/campaigns formulation have been compromised by the use of pseudo-science in modifying the techniques of Marketing.

The session was an interactive one and the students in attendance put in some really interesting aspects to the discussion throwing concepts backed up with examples from real world. The effects of advertisements in marketing communications as they were showcased in the traditional media in the television, their nostalgia factor and the social/digital media wave using that to encash the same effects simply took the discussions to stratum.

Things which differentiate IIM Udaipur – Global Immersion!

The world is getting smaller and the distances between the nations are reducing. The economies of the world are integrating at a faster pace and there is a critical need for managers in the industry who have an understanding of global business practices, social values, philosophies and cultures. And since the business practices are increasingly becoming “glocal” in their planning, design and implementation, there is an inherent need to increase the skills space of students to fit into the global scenario of the corporate and entrepreneurial world.

IIM Udaipur follows the pedagogy of Immersion and Global Immersion is one of the key offerings of IIMU which, with the immense potential of the associated programmes adds advantages in preparing students as better leaders who can imbibe environment and cultural sensitivity and manage businesses and people from diverse cultures.

IIMU ensures provision of international exposure to its students in multiple ways with the aim to facilitate greater student and staff mobility across different global dimensions and institutional research partnerships through collaboration with globally reputed business schools of Europe, North America and Asia. The focus is to help the students in developing a specialized set of internationally relevant skills, perspectives and experiences with a thriving zest of peer pressure. This in turn helps in fostering a spirit of global thinking and developing acumen of personal and professional growth.

The highlights of the international aspects of IIM Udaipur are:

1. Dual Degree PGP for Executives in Global Supply Chain Management: IIM Udaipur and Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management have designed a dual degree programme to cater to the present global industry requirements and to equip the executives with skills to deal with complex supply chains across the world. IIMU’s students brush shoulders with students from Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP), Mexico and Tianjin University, China besides the students from Purdue. At the end of the program, students are offered a PGDM from IIM Udaipur and a MS from Purdue University, USA in Global Supply Chain Management. The nuances of Supply Chain Management theories and international business techniques and practices help the students to assimilate the learning experiences of studying overseas and honing their skills for the working arrangements in India & abroad.

2. Student Exchange Programme (STEP): The student exchange program at IIM Udaipur aims at giving the students a global exposure academically and culturally. The students spend a term of their course in globally acclaimed universities of Germany and France. This leap offers an adaptation to a bouquet of offerings like a broadened outlook, leadership attributes, team working, divergent mind set, keen eye for detail, communication skills, emotional maturity, healthy appetite for risk taking and decision making abilities. The breadth of STEP is one of the greatest opportunities that help the students to soak customs, traditions and pedagogy of other institutes as well as get a taste of different cultures. During this time, their counterparts from those universities come down to the IIM Udaipur campus. The globalization of businesses needs networking with people of different backgrounds. This opportunity helps students to interact with students of different nationalities and eventually build networks with people at a global level.

3. International Business Practices (IBP): IIM Udaipur offers a unique elective in the second year of its PGP Programme – IBP, where the students get a chance to work hands-on on a live project with industry experts in MNCs at their abroad locations like UAE and Bangkok. The sharing of ideas and experiences help the students to understand in depth, new markets and opportunities which can be tapped upon in the future. The holistic perspective and knowledge acquired about the nuances of global working methodologies enhance the scope of the future objectives of students.

4. International Summer Internships: The highlight of IIM Udaipur’s summer internship placements have been the international internships offered by companies located in UAE and Qatar. This is a continuation of the process where in a span of two months, students get to work in a global business environment in an economy different than the Indian environment. The cross-cultural exposure, diverse teams and the industry project covered in the internships complement the learning process. The experience gained during the period is immense and the exchange of ideas and the knowledge of global practices enhance the learning objectives and approach which the students have to follow for the rest of the three trimesters of the PGP Programme.

5. Global Business Project (GBP): GBP is a unique action-based learning course spanning across four months, February to May, wherein, under each project, 5-6 students from across geographies work on general consulting and strategic problems of clients under the faculty guidance applying their functional, cross-cultural, foreign language and virtual teamwork skills towards focused, compelling, measurable and actionable deliverables. Many companies which have provided projects are household names, such as P&G (China and Brazil), GE Health Care (Brazil), Eli Lilly (Brazil), CITIBANK (China), Google, SAP, PepsiCo and others. IIM Udaipur is a member of this prestigious consortium along with 12 global universities namely UNC-Chapel Hill, Columbia, George Washington University, Lingnan College, Miami, Maryland, Purdue, Pittsburgh, San Diego State, University of Connecticut, University of Wisconsin and UNISINOS.

6. Joint Research and Faculty Exchange: Faculty Groups working together on collaborative research projects is another channel for engagement which adds a dash of benefits in increasing the international exposure factor of those associated with the institute. The Center for Development Management (CDM) at IIMU has a MoU with Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy for joint research and faculty exchange. CDM is a research center that seeks to address development challenges in India by bringing management skills and social science knowledge, together in order to enable qualitative social transformation through the Summer School Programme.

7. International Visiting Faculty: IIMU has faculties visiting from Switzerland and France to teach electives with a global perspective. This in addition to the other programmes ensures that the students and the campus benefit from the international exposure.

International Exposure Figures

The ride was full of fun, laughter, excitement, parties, late-night studies, life-long friendships, hour-long enmities, never-ending assignments and inhumane study schedules. Those brief yet memorable moments that made the journey worthwhile. Now, that the roller coaster is coming to an end, it’s time to say #‎thankyouIIMU (Rahul Agrawal, PGP Class of 2014)

Endless sessions, amazing Profs, trekking, guest lectures, early morning outings, late night parties, Table Tennis at 2 am, night canteen, Leadership Summit, Poha at shashtri circle, dinner at Upre, coffee at Fatehsagar, SFM, CLU auctions, U-Mart, HBR Case Studies, project submissions, turn it in, 11:59:59 pm deadlines, getting WACed and so much more…This journey has been so amazing and awesome, will miss every part of it…but will miss all those awesome people who made these 2 years unforgettable. Love u PGP 2012-14 batch & thank you IIM U.#‎thankyouIIMU (Parikshit Kapila, PGP Class of 2014)

#‎thankyouIIMU I am obliged to IIMU for giving me an opportunity to not only learn business management but also become a better person. (Vaibhav Narain, PGPX Class of 2014)

There are a lot of things am thankful for at Indian Institute Of Management Udaipur – IIMU.. starting with this monstrous download speed! .. #‎ThankyouIIMU (Ishan Raj Bhardwaj, PGP Class of 2014)

Its all started with a 5X5 room shared with a guy from Banaras
in a hostel named after a famous mathematician Ramanujam
inhabited by 29 similar chaps with a questions in mind
“kya humne sahi kiya”

None of us felt suffocated when such a room is stuffed by all 29
Whether its an exam night or making a fun of our plight
Over the years, I hope batches will give our analogy
But I still wonder “Isn’t RHKL an ideology”

A change from RHKL guy to an MDS boy was equally exciting
A place with love and little fighting

The limits have been broken here with the help of you all
whether its roaming freely late night for Poha or walking on the ramp
I have been able to realize my true potential at IIMU
And will attribute my transformation to a selected few

Someone says “I think a lot on trivial matters”
It’s good as thinking is a function of mind which will fade away with time
But not the moments which I have spent from the start
Not with the application of mind but of heart

Memories will be erased as each of us will get busy in our life
But not the experiences which will stay till eternity
and that what the life is
A journey and not the end (Aadish Jain, PGP Class of 2014)

A journey that started two years ago with a simple FB status msg sayin “Finally IIM”…. now ends……Thank You IIM Udaipur (Aasif Ali Khan, PGP Class of 2014)

Your emotional updates are infectious for sure! I revisited the note that i had penned down on my way back exactly one year back and somehow the feelings seems to have stuck on…

Happy Convocating !! (Gudakesh Kumar, PGP Class of 2013)

Bombardment of emotions…IIM Udaipur…never knew it would be soo hurting to leave you for the last time..   :’)   ;/ (Swati Chauhan, PGP Class of 2014)

A DREAM CAME TRUE !

Finally years of hard work and determination paid off. It’s been a wonderful journey to say the least and the concluding ceremony became even more blissful by the presence of my parents. All in all, feeling a sense of pride and emotions for having achieved this feat and seeing the happiness in the eyes of my parents. (Rahul Verma, PGP Class of 2014)

#‎thankyouIIMU Exciting time passed by so soon….BONDED FOR LIFE!!! (Ravindran Damodaran, PGPX Class of 2014)

While the four years of MIT life thought me “What life is”, two years of IIMU life is teaching me “Who I am and what I am capable of”, my greatest learning yet; My journey here started with the lots of negative feeling; But “The Biggest learning experience in life always starts with the negative feeling”: I learned it theoretically as well as practically here. #‎thankyouIIMU (Jagadeesh Jana, PGP Class of 2014)

Was all set to leave for Delhi. Got my confirmation mail from IIM Udaipur one night before… decide to chuck everything else.. And what a wonderful decision that is turning out to be… All set for 2 months of internship with GE India…#‎thankyouIIMU (Edwin James, PGP Class of 2015)

IIMU join hands with Datri foundation to organize Stem Cell Donation Registry Camp!

PrayatnaThe Social Responsibility Club of IIM Udaipur organized a Stem Cell Donation Registry Camp in collaboration with Datri Foundation. Datri is a non-for profit organization working for patients suffering from various blood disorders including blood cancer. The event started with an awareness session in which the students were briefed about the need and process of Stem Cell donation. The session was taken by Mr. Rajat, a BITS Pilani Alumnus working full time with Datri Foundation. Around 60 donors registered in the application process of Stem Cell donation. Apart from the students and faculty of IIMU, the event also had around 10 donors from the local Udaipur community.

DSC_0177

The process of stem cell donation starts with a registry camp where the prospective donors are first made aware about the process, benefits and commitment required as a donor. Post the process, an information / consent form recording the details of the donor is filled by the applicant donor. A sample of squab is taken from the donor and the entry is done in the database maintained by Datri with each donor identified by a registration number carried on his / her registration card.

The main motive behind maintaining a database is to increase the chances of finding a suitable donor whose sample matches with a patient suffering from a critical disease like Leukaemia. Stem Cell match depends on a lot of factors like genes, race, ethnicity etc., and hence the probability of fining a match is 1:10,000. Datri has a donor base of 50,000 people in India and has successfully accomplished 51 transplants till date.

DSC_0178

IIMU is committed towards building a student force who is dedicated towards the social causes in the society. And Prayatna works tirelessly towards spreading the awareness and by setting example in the successful achievement in its feat of efforts towards the welfare of the society. One of the feathers in its cap was proven when an uneducated driver from the local city joined the event to register for donation. He communicated that the awareness due to the advertisements in the local newspapers by Prayatna prompted him to join this initiative. Thus, establishing the fact that all the barriers can be crossed by dedicated efforts.

The fact that there are close to 1400 patients in India who are actively looking for Stem Cell donors showcases the criticality of the issue. The process of Stem Cell Donation Registration actually takes only 10 minutes and is administered by a painless procedure. And since little success has been achieved in finding a match for the blood disorder patients till date, the need for increasing the donor base and spreading the awareness about the cause becomes increasingly important. In such a scenario, camps like these organized by the foundation and its association with an institute like IIMU sends a strong message to the ever growing, young and dynamic student community as well as the society at large for awareness and need of active volunteers to come forward and contribute in the noble cause of saving lives.
