The annual cultural fest of IIM Udaipur is back with a bang –Audacity,sponsored by Bank of Baroda will be hosted at the MLSU campus on the 30thand 31st of January, 2016. The event is a microcosm of fun and frolic, with 60 action packed events spread over one weekend. This year’s theme ‘Let’s Retro’,is a tribute to the styles and fashions of the yesteryears.

In the previous edition of the event, Olympian Vijender Singh kicked off MTV roadies from the campus and the Indian rock band Parikrama blazed the stage with their performance. This year too we have performances by the band Euphoria, led by Dr. Palash Sen, an array of amazing group and solo dances, and a musical battle in the War of Bands among other things.  Another highlight of the event is a beauty pageant show – Campus Princess – which will be judged by Koyal Rana, winner of the 2014 edition of Femina Miss India, in association with the Miss India organization. The event is the west-zone auditions for the Femina Miss India 2016.

The purpose of the event is to promote a culture where varied art forms are encouraged. It aims to bring people together to demonstrate and celebrate this culture. In accordance with this objective, the event will be hosting a night of classical Indian tunes which would be played by SPIC MACAY artists Pt. Shubhendra Rao and Saskia Rao de Haas on the 30th of January.

The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur aims to make a meaningful difference in whatever activities it does. A strong sense of social responsibility is imbibed in all of IIM Udaipur’s activities. The institute is committed to giving back to society, playing a role in local development and being in the vanguard of applying principles of ecological sustainability. Events like Street Play would be hosted to develop awareness regarding socially important topics. The institute has planned a tree plantation drive to flag off the eventthis year. Prayatna – the social responsibility club in association with Silvertongues – the public speaking club of IIMU have organized a debate competition for students of schools in Udaipur city on burning issues facing the city and the country.

Staying true to its roots in spreading fun and frolic, Audacity has some unique competitions like Anjaana-Anjaani – a blind dating competition, Insomnia night – an all night long video-gaming competition, Masquerade ball, a life-sized ‘Angry Birds’, human foosball and The Yellow Chilli Udaipur presents Chef-ế-Udaipur – a Masterchef-styled cooking event.

Harvard Business school Delegation visits IIMU

An academic delegation of 36 students from Harvard Business School visited IIM Udaipur campus accompanied by Prof. Shawn Coleon the 8th of January 2016. Prof. Cole is the John G. McLean Professor of Business Administration in the Finance Unit at Harvard Business School.He teaches and conducts research on financial services and social enterprise. IIM Udaipur is the only Indian B-school that the contingent visited as part of its Global Immersion Program(GIP) – a course that requires them to visit emerging economies such as India, South Africa, China etc.

The itinerary of the group includes visits to Delhi, Udaipur and Mumbai. The group visited startups in Delhi such as OYO Rooms etc. and provided consultation on various problems and projects.

The group’s visit in Udaipur started with a visit to an NGO, SevaMandir where theydiscussed and advised on various areas such as policy implementation, waste management and effective regulatory approvals.The group also visited a couple of hospitals in Udaipur for a brief observation of the health facilities and medical infrastructure in this part of the world and to compare health services of private and government establishments. It was followed by a joint case study discussion with students of IIM Udaipur at the IIMU campus.

The session was conducted by IIM Udaipur’s director Prof. Janat Shah and Prof. Cole on a case study discussing the low cost health care model implemented in India by a leading private hospital and the possibilities of replicating the model in emerging economies of South America.

Post the session the students of HBS expressed their satisfaction regarding the fruitful discussion with the students here and also with the teaching methodology at the institute. They highlighted the fact that the pedagogy and the structure of curriculum at IIM Udaipur were similar to the ones at HBS. This exemplifies the standards set by the institute due to itsfocus  onentrepreneurship, research and contribution to society. The visiting members were extremely impressed by the numerous initiatives of the institute such as Rural Immersion, International Business Practices (IBP) and various community development initiatives.

This was indeed a proud moment for IIM Udaipur as a delegation from the most prestigious university in the world visited the institute.IIMU has been amongst the select few B-schools in India which promote such programs and the experience of interacting with the HBS students is a great learning experience for the students.

 

Samvaah: IIM Udaipur’s Marketing Conclave, 2014

Samvaah– The first edition of the annual Marketing Conclave of IIM Udaipur was hosted on 15th November, 2014 at the institute.

Samvaah is a student driven initiative that was conceived and organized by MarClan- the Marketing Club of IIMU. Samvaah, in sync with its name’s translation- “Marketplace” is an initiative to bring together marketing enthusiasts from academia, the local community and industry alike, to share insights and discuss the various developments in the field of marketing.

The umbrella theme for Samvaah 2014 was “Rethink: Changing Marketing Practices with Changing Times”.

The run-up to the event saw numerous online and on-campus competitions being held, with teams from the best B-schools across the country competing in terms of creativity, talent and marketing potential.

The event kicked off with a digital media workshop by Mr. Amit Tripathi- the CEO of Ideate Labs. The workshop began with a very intriguing statement: ‘Welcome to the funeral of digital media…’ and then went on to discuss how being digital has gone beyond just media channels like Facebook and twitter, to become all pervasive in other walks of life as well.

Mr. Tripathi left the students with two important insights: that simplicity and finding common ground between the company and the consumer are the mantra to successful marketing.

The Sales Workshop that followed had the speakers- Mr. Martand Shukla, ASM of Pepsico and Mr. Bharat Nagori, one of the largest distributors in Udaipur, emphasize that profitability and availability were the major requirements of  a good sales campaign, while reiterating the importance of considering sentiment and market  experience while designing a sales and distribution strategy.

The next session included the finals of Juxtapose-a brand extension competition which saw students from IIM Indore (Mumbai Campus), SPJIMR and two teams from IIM Udaipur, do their best to impress the judges with the innovativeness and clarity of their ideas, with team WarClan of IIM Udaipur eventually winning the first prize. The judges also shared very unique insights on proper segmenting and positioning of the product, with the audience.

The post lunch session began with an address by Prof. Janat Shah-Director, IIM Udaipur. Prof. Shah laid emphasis on the three main focus areas of IIMU, namely research, transformation through the MBA program and integration with the local community, all of which were the driving factors behind the organization of Samvaah.

The event ended with a felicitation of the speakers and a vote of thanks. IIMU’s first marketing conclave was a resounding success with speakers and participants alike, appreciating the seamless organization of the entire event and the insights they gained through the discussions.

IIM Udaipur has always laid a strong emphasis on integrating with the local community and continuing this initiative, the conclave saw 65 participants from various institutes around Udaipur being part of the event. IIM Udaipur presents Samvaah 2014 – Annual Marketing Conclave!

Indian Institute of Management Udaipur is going to host the first edition of its Annual Marketing Conclave, “Samvaah 2014“, on 15th November 2014 in IIMU Campus.
Conceived and organized by MarClanThe Marketing Club of IIM Udaipur, Samvaah, in sync with its name translation – “Marketplace”, is a student driven initiative that aims to unite marketing enthusiasts from different B-Schools in a day long conclave. A precursor to the event has a series of on-line and on-campus competitions covering different verticals of Marketing. The competitions resonate to give different B-Schools participants a platform to showcase their talent, creativity and marketing potential and win exciting rewards.
One other key feature of the summit is to invite industry leaders from the corporate world to the IIMU campus and share their insights with students through engagement in diverse panel discussions, lectures and workshops.
MarClan strives to ensemble the marketing talent within the IIMU campus and different business schools for knowledge exchange and Samvaaha 2014 scheduled on 15th November 2014 in IIM Udaipur is largely centered on our umbrella theme, Rethink.

The Leadership Summit 2014 organized at IIM Udaipur concludes on a successful note!

Indian Institute Management Udaipur hosted the third edition of its annual flagship event, The Leadership Summit 2014 on 23rd August, 2014 at the Durbar Hall, City Palace, Udaipur.

The Leadership Summit is a student-driven initiative which is organized by the Media and Industry Cell (MiiC) of IIMU. The event serves as a platform for corporate leaders to share their opinions and views on select themes through diverse engaging panel discussions. The panelists comprise of distinguished leaders from industries and academia. The objective of the summit is to get unique insights from the leaders and get to understand the direction in which the economies, corporate policy making and businesses are heading viz-a-viz globalization and competition. The first two editions of The Leadership Summit have been immensely successful. The umbrella theme for the Leadership Summit 2014 was “RETHINK: A paradigm shift in the Leadership Trends of India“.

The event began with a Welcome Address by Prof. Janat ShahDirector, IIM Udaipur. Prof. Shah laid emphasis on the initiatives on which the institute has a strong focus such as Immersion, Research, Analytics, Entrepreneurship and Social Responsibility.

Dr. V RaghunathanCEO, GMR Varalakshmi Foundation & Ex-President, ING Vysya Bank served as the Chief Guest in the event. Mr. Puneet DalmiaMD, Dalmia Group of Industries was the Keynote Speaker. Both the leaders laid emphasis on the need of a social purpose behind every leadership initiative.

The event had three student moderated panel discussions. First Panel’s theme was “Rethink Approach: How to think, act and lead in this era of Globalization?” with participating speakers, Mr. Balaji R. Narayanswamy General Manager, Mindtree, Mr. Sukanti Ghosh Member of Global Management Committee, APCO Worldwide and Mr. Vishal Mathur VP Sales, Eicher Motors. The panelists discussed the key challenges faced in Globalization, skills and opportunities present in going Global.

Second Panel’s topic of discussion was “Rethink Boundaries: Can we learn Leadership from boundaries beyond corporate world?” with participants Mr. Ramkumar Executive Director, ICICI Bank Limited, Mr. Praveen Mathur Major General (Retd.) & Advisor, Director General Hydrocarbons, Ministry of Petroleum, Mr. M P Vasimalai IIMA Alumnus & Founder, DHAN Foundation and Mr. Kalyan S. Bose Senior Volunteer, SPIC MACAY. The panelists discussed the various facets of leadership development citing examples from multiple avenues.

Third Panel saw discussions on the theme “Rethink Convention: Women in Leadership Roles – Changing the rules of the game!” with panelists Ms. Arnabi Marjit GM-HR, Lupin Pharma, Ms. Namrata Gill VP, Organizational Development and Talent Management, Mahindra and Mahindra and Ms. Neelima Khetan GM, Sustainability and CSR, Coca-Cola India. The speakers discussed in detail about the challenges faced by women in the corporate world, the possible solutions and the changing landscape in the business world.

The event also saw a special segment on Big Ideas Session delivered by Mr. Sanjay PanigrahiCEO, Sahaj e Village Ltd. who spoke largely on the Rural India and the potential of management principles application in the sector.

CreaZione 1.0 Branding Competition at IIM Udaipur!

MarClanThe Marketing Club of IIM Udaipur organized an intra-institute branding competition, CreaZione 1.0 at IIMU campus. The competition was designed around the process of bidding, creating brand elements of a product and selling the product with a communication programme to the audience and the judges. The concept of the event aimed at testing the marketing and brand management skills of the participating students.

A total of 8 teams comprising of students from both the years of the PGP Programme participated in the competition. The competition had three rounds:

Round 1: Auctioning – The first round of the event was auction based. The participating teams were provided with a basket of twelve brands (mostly an existing company) and they needed to bid for buying the rights of creating a new brand mantra for the company.

Round 2: Idea Generation / Pitching – The teams then had to bid for the brands and buy the required rights. Then, they had to dive in and use their creative talent to come up with a new brand mantra for the brand.

Round 3: Product Release / Media Communication – The teams which proceeded for the final round had to face off in a media clash. They had to pitch in for the product release and face the media and defend their strategies.

Team Crime Patrol was declared the winner of the event while Team Men at Work and Team Agarbatti stood at second and third position respectively. Carrying forward the legacy from the last year’s inception of Spandan, this year’s conclave was conceptualized around the central umbrella theme, “Rethink: Changing HR practices with Changing Times”. The event began with an opening address by Prof. Janat ShahDirector, IIM Udaipur. He spoke on the importance of collaboration of academia and industry on a common platform like Spandan for discussions critical for the reinvention of the HR Industry. Prof. Shah also laid stress on the IIMU’s strong focus on Research, Analytics, Immersion in the three forms of Rural, Corporate & Global Immersion and Entrepreneurship & Intrapreneurship in his speech. He also threw light on the student driven initiatives through different clubs and committees at IIMU citing the example of Spandan been organized entirely by dHRuvaThe HR Club of IIM Udaipur.

Prof. Sunil MaheshwariAdjunct Faculty, IIM Ahmedabad and Ex-Advisor to the HRD Ministry, Govt. of India, served as the Keynote Speaker in the conclave. Prof. Maheshwari brought in his research statistics in his speech which showcased the changing trends in HR and the challenges posed to it in the current scenario. His mathematical study was based on a survey on leadership traits collected from a sample of MDP candidates who occupy top leadership positions in India and the persistent need-gap analysis in their skills. He concluded his speech with mentioning the importance of investment in faculty development and pedagogy modification with time in management schools.

The key things highlighted in the discussions were usage of social media in employee engagement & networking, technology, communication, feedback and references. Traits of a leader, differentiation between a leader and a follower, main hindrances in current leadership development and initiatives and strategies in different industries taken for leadership development, were also focused in the discussions. Organizations strive towards adopting best HR practices and to align HR strategies with the organizational strategies to succeed in the long run. Hence, the emerging practices like pyramid organizational structures and change management were also brought in the discussions by the panelists.

The interactions were enhanced by the questions put up by the students and faculties in the audience during the panel discussions. The event was very well received by the IIMU community. Kathan 2014, the second edition of the annual HR Magazine of dHRuva – The HR Club of IIM Udaipur was also released marking the success of the event. IRIS – The Photography Club of IIM Udaipur helped in covering the event by capturing pictures and videos. The event concluded with the felicitation of the eminent speakers of the event and a vote of thanks.

Indian Institute of Management Udaipur celebrates its third anniversary!

It was 27th July 2011 when Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur joined the league of the premier business schools across the country. The foundation laid by its Director – Prof. Janat Shah remains firm as the institute completes its 3 years full of enthusiasm, aspiration and accomplishments. It is an important milestone in the institute’s journey of becoming a unique establishment in all the facets of management education.

The auspicious occasion of IIMU’s third anniversary was graced by the presence of the institute’s Director and was celebrated jointly by the students, faculties and staff members. The biggest asset of the institute, its students, organized a cake cutting ceremony in all high spirits and greeted everyone on the anniversary. The pride was visible among all the members of the IIM Udaipur Community as they described the event as – “three years of togetherness, three years of sharing & caring, three years of happiness, three years of trust and three years of transformation “ .

Inclusive India Forum 2014: A joint initiative by IIM Udaipur and HBS Club of India concludes on a highly successful note at IIMU!

Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur in association with the Harvard Business School Club of India successfully organized the first Inclusive India Forum 2014 at IIM Udaipur campus on 26th July, 2014.

The event was attended by stalwarts from corporate and social sectors. Prominent delegates included 12 Harvard Business School Alumni, 23 Corporate Social Responsibility Heads from various companies and 44 Founders & Senior Functionaries from NGOs from across India. Inclusive India Forum is the first event of its kind organized in India, where different stakeholders from corporate organizations and NGOs shared one platform to discuss ways in which partnerships can be created in the development management space for the larger benefit of society.

The event began with a welcome address by Prof. Janat ShahDirector, IIM Udaipur. Dr. Shah mentioned the need to focus on the development in the region. He specified the deep commitment of IIM Udaipur to work towards this agenda citing many initiatives like the Center for Development Management, partnerships with local corporates and NGOs like Hindustan Zinc, Secure Meters, Seva Mandir, Arth and Aajeevika Bureau among others. His speech concluded with the purpose of the event to devise an action plan through the collaboration and discussions with the delegates and to make dependable friends who will join IIMU in working towards the inclusive growth of India.

The keynote address for the event was delivered by Dr. Ganesh Natarajan, Vice Chairman & CEO, Zensar Technologies and Chairman of the 2000 member strong NASSCOM foundation. He talked about his initiative which aims at making at least one member of every Indian family digitally literate, so that the access to technology and the corresponding awareness can help them avail the development initiatives. He emphasized that the vision of HBS Club of India should be contributing in the field of social causes and not that of a mere business beneficiary body.

The participation of the delegates for the day began with first panel discussion on “The Corporate World on the Social Sector” which was moderated by Dr. Ganesh Natarajan. The panelists Prof. Janat Shah, Mr. S. Ravichandran – Cummins India, Ms. Neera Nundy – Dasra and Mr. Sanjaya Singhal – Secure Meters spoke largely on the topic and the audience participation brought in key pointers like lack of need-gap analysis of planning/scalability skills in NGOs, absence of CSR initiatives taken by companies in non-industrialized regions of India, strategic alignment with corporate organizations and executional challenges of incorporating CSR values in corporations.

Second panel discussion on the theme “Development Management Sector in India: What works and what does not?” was moderated by Mr. Anshul Arora, CEO – Edvance Group and saw Mr. Aditya Nataraj – Piramal Foundation, Mr. Ajay Mehta – Seva Mandir, Ms. Rita Soni – NASSCOM, Mr. Anoop Kaul – Basix, Ms. Uma Ganesh and Mr. Jayant Sahastrabuddhe discussing on existing as well as future possible partnerships between civil society, NGOs and corporates. The challenges like experimental flexibility in schemes such as NREGA by the government, importance of knowledge creation and knowledge asymmetry were discussed. The common opinion which emerged was that educational institutions should focus on making social leaders, and bring about capacity and capabilities building along with partnering with local industries to work towards nation building. The message of ‘CSR as a fundamental duty of everyone’ was emphasized by the panel.

The panel discussions were followed with brainstorming sessions wherein delegates segregated into three focus groups to discuss on current and possible future initiatives in Livelihood, Healthcare and Education sectors. The mutual discussions between corporate, CSR representatives and social sector heads in common teams brought perspectives on formulating roadmaps to give directions for future collaboration on social projects. The implementation challenges at the grass root level and the deep understanding of the bottom of the pyramid brought in by the NGOs helped in developing of a complete functional roadmap.

The event saw enthusiastic response and the participants were enthralled with a cultural program in the evening with highlights of traditions of Rajasthan. The delegates also had interactions with the student community of IIMU and partake a Heritage walk and NGO visit on 27th July, 2014.
