Top-grade Management education is not only the indispensable need of the growing complexities of corporatization, but blue-ribbon management graduates can also bring in a structured and efficient functioning in the other organizations of our society. And our Director Sir ensures that the students of IIMU are trained by the best faculties by time and again adding eminent Professors on board who strengthen the social responsibility, uniqueness and transformation fundamentals of the students.

There is a uniquely eclectic and awe-inspiring method in Professor Jagdeep Chhokar’s modus operandi of conducting classes. His vast experience, diverse educational background, interests, affiliations and rich cross-cultural exposure bring out elysian words from the man forcing students to think out of the box and break the shackles of single and narrow minded approach of forming opinions.

Bywords like “A fish is the last one to know about water” and “Customer loyalty is a hoax” come in a perennial flow in the classes when he informs the practices that have been shaped into the functioning of existing organizations and the challenges prevalent in them along with the ways they have been or should have been dealt with. “Even the notion of time has different significance across different cultures” was the adage with which he began a class to explain how the budding managers should stop being influenced by the western world and their methods and cease the approach of inculcating the customized western techniques in Indian business scenarios. India as the biggest democracy has its own set of problems, and the way they have been handled has been fairly good keeping in mind the volume of challenges that were laid in front. And finally, the last class’s gem, “Expect, accept and respect differences” was the perfect one for ending the amazing experience of the sessions on an intellectually enriching high note. According to him, by broadening our aspirational space and reflecting upon our strengths, we can work towards the betterment of the society in our own way by streamlining our target and yet not being too radical in the formulation of new insights.

Professor Jagdeep Chhokar’s hunger for knowledge, decorum, sharp observational skills, pragmatic thoughts and the outstanding work, he and his team have been doing for the Indian democracy is an inspiration and motivation for everyone not to mention the students of IIMU. Such decorated teachers and great mentors are the real honour and insignia of IIMU.

We sincerely hope that he continues to nurture the future batches of IIMU with his body of knowledge and he and his team win many more such prestigious awards for the excellent work they are doing for strengthening the Indian democracy. Congratulations and proud of you Sir!

(Professor Jagdeep S. Chhokar is a teacher/trainer, researcher, and advisor in management, a lawyer, a citizen activist, and a birdwatcher and naturalist.

IIM Udaipur Analytics Excursus

Meliorating the benchmark set by the “E-Commerce Excursus”, the Analytics Excursus was successfully organized on 5th December, 2013 in IIM Udaipur. The Analytics Conclave-2013 is a part of the series of summits planned by the Indian Institute of Management Udaipur, under the banner”Excursus”. Focusing on the importance of extensive data getting generated every day and to take the useful insight from it which can be used for decision making, the theme for the event was decided as “Big Data- Big Advantage”.

The Conclave encompassed a Presentation Challenge and two Panel Discussions. The Presentation Challenge comprised of a competition amongst student teams presenting the importance of Analytics and how well it has benefited the organizations. The panel discussions was a platform for industry leaders to share their expertise through engaging dialogues on two sub-themes within the umbrella theme of “Big data – Big Advantage”.

Panel Discussion 1: Big Data: Opportunities and Challenges

The new era of data presents distinct opportunities for organizations but at a certain cost. In order to be successful one has to understand the major functional areas that attract applications of Big Data. Organizations have challenges varying from acquiring the relevant data to selling this idea in the Indian market.

iimu_excursus1

Mr. Roy Cherian, CEO & Founder of Marketelligent, Mr. Gaurav Vohra, Co-Founder of Jigsaw Academy and Mr. Dripto Mukhopadhyay, Vice President, Indicus Analytics shared their views on the first topic of the day “Big Data: Opportunities and Challenges”. The general view of the panel regarding MBA students and Big Data was that MBAs should be more concerned about the impact this has on the business and should be able to quantify the results.

Panel Discussion 2: Big Data: Transforming Businesses and Creating Competitive Advantage

The opportunities brought about by Big Data have to be transformed into value by transforming the business practices. This technical revolution can be managed only by creating an enabling environment for using Big Data and transforming the internal business processes. Creating sustainable competitive advantage for companies depends on how well they transform the uses of Big Data.

The next discussion witnessed business experts Mr. Ashit Panjwani, Executive Director at SAS Institute, Mr. Amar Saxena, Head of Analytics at RBS and Mr. Rajbir Singh, Global Head – Customer Centric Solutions at HCL. IIM Udaipur gets a taste of Ornithology

Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur saw its students developing a new hobby, ‘Exploring the art of birding’ in the green hills of Udaipur, well known as the ‘Venice of the East’.  The lake city offers rewarding bird watching opportunities which the students attempted to make full use of by organizing a birding trip on a fine Sunday morning.

The day started early at 6:30 am despite the winter chill, with everyone coming in jackets and monkey caps. The bird watching trail was set in the lush green area of IIM Udaipur Campus. The guide for day was Prof. Jagdeep Chhokar, an avid bird watcher.  He was a Dean at IIMA and currently is a visiting faculty at IIM Udaipur. He has been a fan of Salim Ali books, famously known as the “Birdman of India”. Books written by him were carried on the way to gain insights. Other companions were a set of binoculars and cameras.

Students of IIM Udaipur who were passionate about nature walks and photography turned up to enjoy the bliss of bird watching. Winter is by far the best season for bird watching in Udaipur. Udaipur hosts more than 500 species of birds including the Grey Heron, Steppe Eagle, Painted Snipe and many more.

1452572_247499628740619_693056994_n

The group saw 14-15 species including Bay-backed Shrike (Lanius vittatus), Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer), Asian Paradise-Flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradise), Rufous Treepie (Dendrocitta vagabunda), Purple Sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus), Indian Blue Robin (Luscinia brunnea), Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus) and many more.

The lush green campus also supports a pond which gave an opportunity to observe water birds. “It was great to be a part of the group. The hardest part about bird watching is to spot the birds. You’ll have birds all around you. You could hear them, you can see the trees move, but you won’t be able to spot them. You have to be patient, very patient,” said one of the students.

1450825_247502155407033_436880117_n

Prof. Chhokar helped students understand how to make the best of bird watching by giving them tips on the science of Ornithology. Another student who was thrilled by this experience said, “Professor Jagdeep Chhokar is the best man you can go bird watching with. He knew almost all the birds. He taught us everything from how to spot the birds, what to do and what not to do while bird watching. He knows a lot about birds. His knowledge in this domain is extra ordinary.”

IRIS – The Photography Club of IIM Udaipur made sure none of these rare moments were missed and captured them for those who missed this opportunity. The day ended at 9:30 am with loads of photos and memories.

Photographs of the excursion can be viewed on the Facebook page of IRIS.
