The various competitions and workshops were held across the two days and provided ample opportunities for learning and testing one’s competencies. The various competitions included events that tested core concepts such as Vitt-Sangram, the finance case study competition and marketing events such as Juxtapose, the ad-making event to events such as the short film making competition which was judged by eminent director Mr. Vibhu Puri. The competition was extremely intense as a number of teams were from other top B-schools such as IIM Ahmedabad, Symbiosis, IIM Amritsar etc. The students of IIMU too gave their best and bagged laurels in several events. A number of workshops were held too such as the Dabbawala workshop, the Consultimg workshop etc which were attended in great numbers as students had the chance for close interaction with industry veterans. The Dabbawala workshop in particular was a huge hit as Mr. Vijay Aggarwal provided an in depth study of the world famous supply chain system of the Dabbawalas.

The two day inaugural fest was thus organized on a very grand scale even though the college is in its nascent stage. The various summits and workshops proved to be ideal grounds for learning and understanding of the various facets of the corporate world. The competitions tested competencies to the hilt and hence proved to be ideal for the best minds of the country. The smooth conduction of the event in itself provided umpteen challenges but the coordinated efforts of the student body and everyone associated with the institute helped the IIM Udaipur fraternity pull it off. Hence, Solaris was a huge success and it certainly set the benchmark for other top B-schools to emulate.

Dhandha- Chase your Dream !!

Entrepreneurship as such is a dream. Even one who has no skills and no wit, dreams of it. Yet, the feeling is one that escapes many. To be able to run a brand new business, especially one that you have envisioned and developed isn’t something everyone gets a chance to do. However everyone should give it at least one shot.

IIM Udaipur since its inception has given special incentives and support to those who wish to venture on their own and create businesses. Keeping up with the tradition, Saksham- The E-Cell of IIM Udaipur created the concept of Dhandha. The event was conducted on 11/07/2015.

                                              1

Dhandha was a fun filled event created with the intention of promoting entrepreneurship on campus. Its main ploy was to let people chase dreams or small scale ideas that could be scaled up later in an advent of getting the feel of what running a business venture feels like. 50 students participated and were fragmented into six teams. Each was then given Rs.400 and a few hours to do what they wanted to. Where some made and sold fruit ice creams, others went to the extent of ironing clothes. Some even decided to trade in consumables and in the spirit of the game it was allowed.

The teams were then judged on the basis of not only the profit made but also the scalability of the idea, innovation and the sustainability of the model. It was pleasant to know that nearly all, even those who had just barely done the logistics had an idea of how to scale up and what would be required to do so. The event also brought the members of the teams closer to each other and in all was a success. Finally the team that won was “Dhandhaneurs”.

                                               2

The main reasons the judges chose them were their innovation and relevance to the concept and the situation, rather the context. Second the marketing gimmicks as well as the ‘on the spot’ learnings displayed from customer feedbacks were also taken into picture by them. These qualities, the judges found were crucial to running a business. Apart from this the ‘Most Creative award’ was given to ‘The Lalas’.

                                           3

All in all, the participants enjoyed a lot during the event and got a glimpse of the criticalities involved in running even a small business. We admire the enthusiasm of all PGP1’s and hope the spirit of entrepreneurship keeps growing.

Tell-a-Tale- An epic 12 hour marathon story telling competition.

Tell-a-Tale was recently conducted by Potpourri- The literary and quizzing club of IIM Udaipur. Tell-a-Tale is a 12 hour marathon event where budding authors from the local community of Udaipur participated to write 5 different stories. All 15 participants were grouped into 5 teams of 3 writers each. Each team was provided with a beginning paragraph and told to write 12 chapters based on the initial paragraph. All the teams were provided with the same beginning and asked to dish out their own stories.

IMG_3831

The stage was set and participants assigned their teams. Out of the 15 participants, nine were from IIM Udaipur while the other 6 were local budding authors from Udaipur. At 8:30 pm on Saturday evening the event got going. Teams had arranged themselves in the order in which they were going to write the chapters. Once the order was decided, the first member of each group started writing the story while the other two left the room. The other two members had been given a read only access so that could see how the story was shaping up. The first round lasted for three hours in which every member wrote a chapter each for one hour. At the end of first round participants were given a 10 minute breather where they could refresh their minds. At the beginning of the second round participants were asked to give a title to their story and also specify the genre of their tale. The same process lasted for four rounds.

IMG_3684

The event was a great opportunity for local budding authors to show their writing skill. The 5 stories are going to be forwarded to a group of publishers who will judge the best story and declare them a winner. The winning team will get their stories published by the publisher. The opportunity of getting their first story meant a great way to start of their journey as a professional writer.

IMG_3681

The event was an unusual experience for the IIMU students where they could for once distance themselves from the business of business and revel in the joy of writing. The participants from the local community of Udaipur were mostly students pursuing their graduation. Vineet Sharma has recently given his 12th standard board exams and is preparing for his JEE entrance exams. But he says he is passionate about writing and like writing scripts. He wishes to one day write and direct his own movie. For him Tell-a-Tale was a great avenue to meet other budding authors like him and share ideas and learn from each other.
Gauri Pandya writes poems and stories in our national language HINDI. She is currently looking to publish her first book. “This is a very good platform for young writers like me to showcase my writing skills. But I also feel that this competition should be conducted in English as well as Hindi to promote Hindi language writers as well”.
