Mr. Mahajan spoke extensively on the topic “The Marketing Panorama – Reclaiming Marketing from ROI Zealtory“. Coined to what he called as “The ROMI TRAP”, he elaborated on how companies’ drive towards measuring and quantifying the return on marketing investment and advent of new mediums and platforms like digital and social media have been cannibalising the culture of Marketing. According to him the intuition and creativity which led to many successful and innovative marketing strategies/campaigns formulation have been compromised by the use of pseudo-science in modifying the techniques of Marketing.

The session was an interactive one and the students in attendance put in some really interesting aspects to the discussion throwing concepts backed up with examples from real world. The effects of advertisements in marketing communications as they were showcased in the traditional media in the television, their nostalgia factor and the social/digital media wave using that to encash the same effects simply took the discussions to stratum.

The various Clubs and Committees at IIMU keep on organizing such sessions round the year to aid students in picking up the nuances of management from the industry that the speakers represent in addition to the subjects’ knowledge gained in the academic curriculum pedagogy.

Things which differentiate IIM Udaipur – Rural Immersion!

Immersion lies at the heart of pedagogy of teaching and delivery at IIM Udaipur. The idea behind immersion is to get students dive into real life environment and explore the learning perspectives themselves. A special feature of the first year of the PGP Programme is the course on Indian Social and Political Environment which attempts to provide insights to students about the inherent social and political issues in a developing country like India. The course strives to make students think on their feet about the role which managers need to play in the 21st century and how out of the box solutions can be derived by lessons of management education for the social problems prevalent in economies.

Rural Immersion Programme is a part of the course wherein the students have to visit the tribal villages of Southern Rajasthan in their respective study groups and stay there for a week. The motive of the programme is to provide the students insights about the nature of the challenges in the rural life of India and the efficacy of existing efforts to address them. Students collaborate with NGOs functioning in the areas from a significant period of time. During the course of the programme, students interact with inhabitants of the villages and the local administration, fill in surveys and try to understand the social life and Human Development Indices in these areas. The outcomes which the students are expected to deliver are recommendations of better solutions for realization of optimal health, education and livelihood drives.

The learning is complemented by a change in outlook towards government initiatives like NREGA with better understanding and appreciation for the bureaucratic services functions and the difficulties in design and implementation of development programmes at the grass-root level. The solutions and means of employment generated in the villages also teach about the perspectives of consumers and producers from the bottom of the pyramid. The untapped potential of the Rural Market can be well utilized by the socio-entrepreneurial ventures in which a lot of big and reputed organizations are faring into.

The programme becomes a life changing experience for the students with takeaways of socio-economic problems still prevalent in the society like illiteracy, poor healthcare infrastructure, malnutrition, unemployment, dowry, child marriages, corruption, nepotism et al. The awareness comes from living with the hamlets of families in the villages about the aspects of life like natural environment, mutual sharing of resources, agents of change serving selflessly in NGOs, compassion and power of communication.

The long term vision behind the transformational initiative is to sensitize the students and develop socially conscious managers who can work in future towards collective and inclusive growth of the society.

Things which differentiate IIM Udaipur – Values!

Treading the path of management career empowers one with a responsibility to create social and economic values for the society. A large part of the managers’ careers involves real time complex decision making in testing and demanding situations and the decisions affect organizations, citizens, communities and the environment.

The pedagogy at IIMU is designed keeping the ideaor in mind to develop sensitized and responsible managers instilled with values which will help them in every stage of their lives. Convened by the visionary leader, Prof. Janat ShahDirector, IIM Udaipur, who is known for his humbleness and modesty in the academic & corporate world and the Board of Governors, the initiatives operational at IIMU foster values in all the actions and commitments of students, faculty and staff. The programmes are specially designed to hone the values of integrity, honesty, respect, ownership, trust and excellence in all the deeds of student managers. The institute administration working round the clock in running the activities of the institute surpass excellence and exemplify a culture of always being approachable, dedicated and helping. The faculty and students work in teams in a multi-cultural and academically diverse setting to develop authorship, respect, understanding, reliability and appreciation of the values of team work.

Provision of Global and Rural Immersion programmes coupled with socially oriented courses like Business Ethics in the curriculum help in the all-round development of students. IIM Udaipur is the only institute in India to have a Code of Conduct and Constitution in place within just two years of its foundation. Each and every word in the constitution has been debated in open house sessions between the students and the administration to ensure there is upright integrity in academic and non-academic pursuits of the students. A Council of Student Affairs is elected by the students, which works towards protecting the rights and duties of the students and to ensure there is openness and fairness in the access of growth opportunities and learning resources of the institute by all.

The institute has adopted practices and standards like IPRS audited placement reports, sharing of institute events’ reports with the community and timely communication of admission process which reflect transparency and accountability. The events of the institute are organized and implemented by the students and the student clubs and committees are given full autonomy to design and control their governance. A number of activities are designed in collaboration with external agencies and organizations like NGOs and government bodies wherein the students strive towards learning social responsibility, inclusiveness and the potential of collective growth.

The endeavor of the institute and its affairs remain a testimony to the sincerity, leadership, uniqueness, creativity, mutual prosperity, equality, sustainability and decorum in communication aligned with the student activities to help them stand out at the helm of their careers and achieve their goals of success with élan in the competitive business world.
