Implementation of GST is a game-changer

Read IIM U Director Prof. Janat Shah’s take on the GST implementation. Head over to this link on the Economic Times Blog

Implementation of GST is a game-changer

Excerpts:

Studies indicate that about 60% of freight movement within the country is by road. Close to 60% of the travel time is spent at various checkpoints.Long lead times make demand forecasts inaccurate and planning difficult. The implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) is, thus, a game-changer. It is expected to set right the aberrations in Indian supply chains and contribute to India’s economic growth, better integrate its market as well as firm up campaigns like ‘Make in India’.

The GST Bill proposes an additional tax not exceeding 1% on interstate supply of goods. Industry has expressed some reservation as this levy is cascading and would encourage firms to set up warehouses in all states irrespective of the trade volume.

Too many points in the supply chain results in unnecessary loading and unloading activities. In addition, it could also distort supply chains. A retailer, say, at Hosur in Tamil Nadu would then be supplied from the Chennai warehouse rather than from the nearby Bengaluru one.

Shake a leg – The Dance workshop at IIM Udaipur

“There are short cuts to happiness and dancing is one of them” – a very apt saying by the famous Austrian author Vicki Baum which truly encompasses dancing in its essence. Thus, breaking away from the traditional overworked schedules in a B-school, Footworx – The Special Interest Group for Dance at IIM Udaipur went about their task of imparting precisely this happiness by organizing a Bollywood Freestyle workshop for the student fraternity. The workshop helped the students learn, hone and simultaneously have a whale of a time.

The workshop was a two hour long event and witnessed a huge turnout. The dance style proposed for the workshop captured student’s interest and gave a chance to express themselves freely. A great sight was to see the exchange students from France trying to learn the much adored dance steps from famous Bollywood tracks.

footworks

The Footworx members choreographed the dance sequence and ensured that everyone was at ease. It was an amazing sight to see the students picking the dance steps quickly even those who had never danced before. It was an amazing sight to see many students trying their utmost to learn the steps but to no avail. However, the effort from all the students for participating and motivating others to join is well appreciated.

It was surely a day to remember for everyone involved and one that all will cherish. The workshop certainly discovered many upcoming dancers in the batch. The great participation has helped develop a base and interest for further similar dance workshops. Footworx members were elated to see the interest amongst students and are confident to return with more such workshops soon. Such events help develop a strong bond between students and also nurture a pleasant culture at IIM Udaipur

A Splendid Display of Determination and ‘Shaurya’

The contingent from IIM Udaipur has made the institute proud at the Annual sports fest of IIM Ahmedabad, Shaurya, which was held recently in the hallowed environs of the esteemed college. The team participated in six sports and the performance in these events helped the institute clinch an overall top ten finish amongst the umpteen numbers of teams. This was largely due to the brilliant performances which eventually led to third place finishes in football, Table Tennis and badminton.

Football Team

Shaurya is an event eagerly awaited by the sports contingent of all B-schools because of the intense competition and also is an amazing breakaway from the hectic life of an MBA student. The same goes for the students who participated from IIMU, both PGP1 and PGP2, who despite the hectic B-school schedules trained regularly and wholeheartedly for every event. The football and table tennis teams defeated IIM Indore in their respective quarterfinals. The football match specifically was a nail-biting contest, with IIM Udaipur finally prevailing on penalties. Carrom too was an event the team excelled in with following players: Sameer, Prasad and Sanish clinching third place. The squash, snooker and badminton teams tried their utmost and the institute applauds their efforts.
