IIM Udaipur students join the conference at National University of Singapore (NUS)

Globalization has touched the lives of almost all of us in India here. At IIM Udaipur, the opportunities to interact at the global scale are immense as global immersion is one the key pillars of the firm foundation of the Institute. The vision shared by Director Dr. Janat Shah is charted responsibly by the students and thus helps in developing globally competent managers.

Each year more than 50 % of the batch receives the International exposure through foreign summer placements, Student Exchange Programme and International Business Programme. Over the years, global inclusion has helped the institute to develop healthy relationships with some of the top rated institutes across the globe.

Adding to the list, College of Alice and Peter Tan, National University of Singapore (NUS) invited students from Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur (IIMU) to join the two day student conference in Singapore and present their views on the topic “Making the difference through community engagement”.

The students from the second year of PGP batch of 2013-2015 expressed their keen interest in joining the conference. As a part of Phase 1, the students submitted the abstract of their analysis on the Community Engagement Models based on collaboration between Non-Profit and For-Profit organizations. The task involved rigorous research and challenge to convert bulk of information into brief, understandable and presentable form.

In the second phase, the group of students travelled Singapore to join two days Symposium organized by CAPT, NUS. The group presented their detailed study of the sample model adopted by SELCO Solar Pvt. Ltd. in community engagement activities. The study involved ground work done by SELCO Solar in understanding needs of the community and the role played by SELCO Incubation Centre in development of local entrepreneurs of Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya who are working in the solar sector. The audience to the presentation included students from other parts of the globe such as Philippines, Singapore, China and Myanmar.

The event formatted through panel discussion where the delegates exchanged views on various topics such as Creating healthier communities, engagement with seniors, challenging inequality and engaging communities with social enterprises.

The students from IIMU along with other delegates also paid a social visit to the underprivileged community in Singapore and noticed the initiatives taken by the government for the development of the deprived. The experience thus gained, helped students to broaden their perspective and also to inculcate the best practices exchanged during their visit.

IIM Udaipur considers global immersion to be one of the cornerstones of its success. The students are given opportunities to explore their hidden abilities and are assumed complete freedom to take up the challenge individually and responsibly.

IIMU in top 5 at prestigious Global Operations Conference 2013

IIM Udaipur has yet again created its mark globally in the Operations & Supply Chain field.

IIMU has been selected as 1 of the 5 top teams from across the globe for the finals of the prestigious Global Operations Conference 2013. Of all the participating teams from US and abroad, only 5 teams have been invited for the final presentation on the live industry challenge in Operations.

The finalists are : Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 2 teams from University of Michigan (UM), Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and IIM Udaipur.

This event organized by Tauber Institute for Global Operations (http://www.tauber.umich.edu/) is considered as 1 of the biggest International conferences in Operations & SCM and sponsored by companies such as Dell, CISCO, Infosys, 3M, Eaton, Microsoft, ALCOA, Steelcase, Conway.

The participants will also get an opportunity to network and socialize with the sponsors as listed above. It will also provide a platform for IIMU to establish global corporate tie-ups with these organizations.

IIM Udaipur in top 6 in Case Competition at Indo US Business Conference

IIM Udaipur was selected among the top 6 Business schools from 80 teams across the globe for the finals of the Indo-US Business Conference – C. K. Prahalad Business Case Competition 2013 at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.  Team from IIM Udaipur competed with the top business schools in the world including Wharton, Kellogg, Booth School of Business – Chicago University, Ross School of Business – Michigan University and ISB Hyderabad in the finals held on 31st October. The keynote speakers in this event were Mr. Mark Fields – COO Ford Motor Company, Ms. Nina Davuluri – Miss America, Prof. Tarun Khanna – Director of South East Asia Institute at Harvard Business School, Mr. John Hieftje – Mayor of Ann Arbor, Mr. Subbarami Reddy – Member of Parliament, Ms. Tulika Mehrotra – Bestselling author and journalist, and several other prominent names from Academia and Politics.

The 5th India Business Conference 2013 held at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, USA is one of the biggest forums worldwide where leaders in the field of business, politics and academia can share ideas about the world’s largest democracy and its huge potential. The theme for IBC 2013 was “Dream, Lead, Inspire”.

The C. K. Prahalad case competition honors the legacy of the late Professor C. K. Prahalad and his vision of how innovation can balance the relationship between profit generation and social value creation for the base of the pyramid. This competition offers students across the globe the opportunity to compete and showcase their business knowledge and innovation by analyzing a case study in the Social Impact field.

The case at this year’s competition was to analyze and recommend whether Ayzh, a for profit Social venture providing health and livelihood solutions, should accept the African contracts and geographically expand its market, or should it choose to focus on India only and grow domestically. The biggest challenge was that this being a real life decision for Ayzh (http://www.ayzh.com), the participants had to focus on all the aspects which social ventures should consider for expansion. The teams had to consider the strategy which was in the best interest of Ayzh’s mission, at this point in the venture’s history.

The IIM Udaipur team called ‘Agents of Change’ comprises Arpit Mehra, Biswarup Das, Rahul Dsouza and Rahul Pandey. All of them are part of the unique PGPX – Global Supply Chain Management Programme offered by IIM Udaipur in collaboration with Purdue University. These students are currently attending the fall semester at Purdue University as part of their course. The USP of their recommendation was an innovation utilizing the concept of Assembly Postponement to shift some of the cost intensive activities closer to the end of the value chain.

Even though they didn’t end on the winning side, the team members felt proud to have represented IIM Udaipur in the final round of this prestigious event which had in audience, 2013 UM India Business Conference attendees and speakers among other participants.

IIM Udaipur E-Commerce Excursus

The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur successfully organized the first edition of the “IIM-Udaipur E-commerce Excursus” on 23rd November 2013 at the institute. Focusing on the importance of innovation, the theme for the discussion was “Shifting Gears: New trends in E-commerce.”

The event was inaugurated with a Welcome Address by Prof. Janat Shah, Director, IIM Udaipur, where he emphasized on the significance of management education in being a transformation experience for the students. He spoke on the importance given at IIM Udaipur towards entrepreneurship, analytics and developing leadership capabilities in students

Mr. Srikant Gokhale, the Founder & CEO of East Avenue, a global research company gave the inaugural speech for the panel discussions. In his address, Mr. Gokhale shared his knowledge on the E-commerce & the Online Retail industry in India. He also educated the students on the future growth prospects present in this field.

The Conclave encompassed a Presentation Challenge and a Panel Discussion. The Presentation Challenge comprised of a competition amongst student teams presenting solutions to issues faced by the Indian E-commerce firms. The panel discussion was a platform for industry leaders to share their expertise through engaging dialogues on the theme “Shifting Gears: New trends in E-commerce”

The event saw stalwarts from the top E-commerce firms expressing their knowledge and views regarding the future of the industry. The panel comprised of Mr. Hitesh Oberoi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Info Edge (India) Ltd and Naukri.com; Mr. Pranay Chulet, Founder & CEO of Quikr India Pvt. Ltd; and Mr. Manish Godha, CEO and Founder at Advaiya Solutions Pvt. Ltd. The speakers brought in different perspectives to the discussion sharing their vast experience in the E-commerce business. They discussed the fast pace at which the E-commerce industry is expanding in India and the implications of the same. They shared their views on how companies can bring improvements and adopt various innovative techniques to meet the demands of the future.

As part of the presentation challenge, the students of IIM Udaipur presented their analysis and recommendations for specific business challenges existing in the E-commerce industry. The challenges were pertaining to adopting the right marketing strategy and supply chain management strategy to resolve the issues faced by the E-commerce firms. The presentations were judged by the esteemed guest speakers.

The E-commerce Excursus concluded with declaration of results for the business challenge competition followed by a vote of thanks. The panel discussion, the student presentations as well as the quality interaction with the industry leaders was an enriching experience for the students of IIM Udaipur.

Diwali in the IIMU way!

Continuing the tradition of vesting uniqueness and social responsibility in its every event, IIM Udaipur celebrated its third Diwali, the festival of lights, in a different way.

A group of 16 students from the IIMU family visited Jeevan Jyoti Child Home, a Govt. run boarding school for underprivileged children, to share moments of celebration and happiness on this auspicious occasion. The event was envisioned and coordinated by Prayatna – The Social Responsibility Club of IIM Udaipur.

The day constituted of fun-filled events, with students from IIMU teaming up with the school children and conducting various activities. The children were engaged in a theme based painting competition to bring out the best of their creative sides and to teach them the importance of team building, enthusiasm and competitive spirit. A football match was conducted, post which the children were gifted a football for all their efforts and unending enthusiasm in all the activities. The day ended with the distribution of sweets, diyas and non-polluting crackers among the children, leaving them with happy faces and smiles. The entire event was funded by the faculty and student fraternity of IIM Udaipur.

The celebrations were then carried forward on the campus, beginning with Laxmi-Ganesh Pooja where the gods were invoked to bestow their blessings on the IIMU fraternity. IIM Udaipur being a green campus fulfilled its duty of protecting nature and promoting eco-friendly initiatives, with its students lighting 50 sky lanterns. IIM Udaipur wishes to inculcate a blend of social responsibility and uniqueness in the leadership abilities of its students and such events lead the drive to achieve that goal.
